What’s good people.  So I hit the 37 Arts Theatre in NYC last night to scope Jim Jones‘ rap musical.  So I walk in the joint, and find myself a seat only to realize I’m pretty much sitting next to Baron Davis.  I chop it up with him for a minute about the Made In America documentary he did on gangs in LA, before I left him alone so he could talk to the 3 beautiful women surronding him.  Back to the show.  I feel like I need to explain the format a little.  The show is pretty much Jim just performing songs off of Pray IV Reign, to a very liberal plot line.  Basically Jim is just generally ballin, gets caught at the wrong place at the wrong time, and there is a shooting at a dice game.  He goes to court and the judge assigns him tasks he must complete in order to remain free.  So then you have Jim Jones in all these situations like talking to children in school and going to sex addicts anonymous meetings that of course only leads to pure hilarity.  I mean I’m just sitting in a theater watching a rapper perform a song about coppin brain while the entire audience is laughing.  I feel like everyone in the audience couldn’t really come to grips with the fact that a JIM JONES MUSICAL even existed, and that they were at it.  The experience was just kind of surreal.  So the question is was it good?  It really depends on what your definition of good is.  There were some technical problems, and the sound system overpowered Jim‘s rapping at times, but the show was most definitely one of the most interesting things I have ever seen.  Who else but Jim Jones would have the audacity to even come out with a hip-hop musical?  Plus I feel like the show remained honest to who Jim was.  Overall I highly recommend the show to anyone that is considering seeing it.  You gunna find yourself laughing a lot, and continually asking yourself the question “Is this really fucking happening?”.
