WMG’s Rhino lays off 30-40
Warner Music Group’s Rhino (catalog specialists) are laying of 30-40 employees.  It’s good to see job cuts out there again. I thought the music biz was getting soft…

Orchard Downsizing: Losing CEO and Job Cuts
The Orchard, frequently thought of as one of the most successful indie digital distributors, and certainly one of the few companies that still seems to be turning a profit, is announcing some changes.  CEO Greg Scholl is out, along with 20% of their staff!  Which begs the question, what’s going on?  are they just trying to bolster their 4th quarter numbers or is there trouble in paradise?

WMG Back on YouTube
After way too long with no content on YouTube, Warner finally reached a deal that will allow them to control the advertising on their artist’s video pages, in an effort to get the content back online.  Question: how come you have to throw a hissy-fit of monstrous proportions and threaten serious legal action in order to get such control (monetarily) on YouTube?  Remember that YouTube gets a lion’s share of it’s traffic from music, so this was bound to happen

.

Google’s “Wave” (Free Max B!)
If you haven’t yet heard about the wave (no, not that wave), Google is trying to revolutionize things again.  Although Gmail etc is great, they’re saying that the entire email and chatting system in place right now are all running on a 1.0 paradigm.  They’re trying to change the whole game up.

.
RealNetworks would do well to shut down Rhapsody
Although it’s generating increasing revenue, the cost to Real Networks of operating Rhapsody is expanding twice as fast.   Real has been around a long time, and in a digital space where streaming services abound, does it make financial sense for them to pin their future to this shaky venture?

.

To close this out, I’m going to ask y’all to speculate…  I’ve heard some dirty rumors floating through the backdoors and alleyways of the magazine world…  another music mag is on the way out… who do you think it is?
