I’ve started to realize something about rap.  You don’t really need to have the most musical talent to succeed.  It’s really become more of age of remaining entertaining.  Don’t get it misconstrued.  Having the ability to make phenomenal music helps you win, and usually lengthens your tenure in the game.  But you don’t need it.  below are five examples of a rapper(s) who fit this bill.

1)  Jim Jones.  I mean the dude has had hits, but who is claiming that he is a lyrical mastermind.  As much as the word swag is played out, Jimmy was one of the first to champion, as well as embody it.  Here is a quintessential Jones moment.  Jim Had got into some sort of an altercation in the Louie store (where else?), with one of Ne-Yo’s management that was also down with Jay-Z’s camp.  The details don’t matter. What matters in that Jimmy rolled to court reciting a freestyle referencing going to court with marijuana eyes.  While smoking a blunt.  Then he has the audacity to shout out Louie on MTV News while rocking the scarf even though that’s where the fight went down.  Who cares about the music when a rapper does that?

2) Lil B?  I know he has done some innovative online marketing stuff.  But let’s be honest I didn’t know who he was until he got sucker punched in the face during an interview.    Then he responded right back busted lip and all with some of the best quotables of all time.  This video is timeless.  “Know what I’m sayin?

There motherf*ckers out here grinding with no legs“- Lil B

3) Three 6 Mafia.  Here is a group that is built off of charisma and raw energy.  However, I do listen to their music as well.  I’m not talking about the weak sauce Three 6 of today.  I’m talking that Gangsta Boo & Crunchy Black Three 6.  Now that I think about it big shouts to Gangsta Boo.  These guys were crazy ignorant even before it became cool to be crazy ignorant in the rap game.  Something I am eternally grateful for.  Their videos >.  Who cares what they were actually saying.

4) Yung Berg.  Who can name a Yung Berg song?  Does it matter.  Everyone knows who he is.  Why because this dude is infamous for being disrespected.  Dude damn near invented a sub genre of hip-hop.  Yung Berg stays winning by always losing.

5) Waka Flocka.  The guy is killing the game right now, and he can literally barely talk.  I don’t listen to any of his music, but if there is a video of him attempting to speak I almost always click on it.  The below video of his now infamous 106th & Park interview.  You gotta love the fact he felt set up because the hosts asked him about voting.  It ain’t that deep Waka.  It’s also a good look when you tell them to bring it back on live televison.

voting cool, voting good
