First off, I want to say that I have been a longstanding Gucci fan.  I mean I still have Trap House and Hard To Kill on CD for god sake.  That being said I’ve been pretty unimpressed with the leaks from his upcoming album The Appeal: Georgia’s Most Wanted, which drops next Tuesday.  There are a couple factors contributing to my current Gucci sate of mind.

1) Over saturation.  I feel like Gucci has actually been giving us too much music.  The guy has dropped two separate mixtapes in a little more than a month leading up to his release.  There used to be a point when I would drop everything I was doing to check out the new Gucci song or video.  Now I’ll wait until after I finish what I’m doing to check it out.  Sometimes I don’t even listen to his new stuff, I just upload it to the site.  For someone that has been a long withstanding Gucci fan, that is not a good look for him.

2) He has become too legitimized.  I’m starting to see the same thing happen with Gucci that happened with Tip.  He is almost becoming too legit.  While many would say Paper Trail was T.I.’s “biggest” record it was also my least favorite.  Why?  Because although doing techno songs with Rihanna are going to blow you up at radio and make the white b*tches go ham, that’s not the music that attracted me to T.I. in the first place.  It was songs like “24’s“.  I feel like the same thing is happening with Gucci.  He is doing songs with people like Pharrell, Swizz Beatz & Estelle.  That’s obviously a good look in theory, and I respect all those artists as individuals.  I’m just not sure if a Gucci Mane song is the place for them.  Which leads to my final point.

3) Gucci’s production.  What happened to the guys that made Gucci Mane…well Gucci Mane?  The dudes that crafted my favorite Gucci songs were Nitti & Zaytoven.  I mean I think Gucci may have had a falling out with Nitti (what rapper that Nitti’s worked with hasn’t he “fallen” out with), but I though Zaytoven was his go to guy.  I mean I feel like Jay-Z needs to be f*cking with guys like Pharrell & Swizz.  However when it comes to Gucci I want to hear songs like “That’s My Hood” & “Pillz“.  We don’t need complicated and glamorous production for Gucci, because that isn’t the type of music Gucci makes.

But hey, it’s just the opinion of one rap nerd.  Scope three leaks from the project below, and his most recent video and judge for yourself.

Edit: Pharrell’s hook on “Haterade” is pure crack.  Still not sure it’s the best song for Gucci.

  1. Good read Sam…I could have sworn I read somewhere that Zaytoven is in jail…but then again I just also read that he did some production on The Appeal…but in my {humble} opinion, I think Gucci Mane hasn't made any real impact in the music industry because he's very forgettable. It's hard for me to list off his hits and I live in Augusta GA…Gucci is always on the radio. It boggles me how he is able to stay relevent…probably due to his recent jail stint(s)….some kids go crazy for that ish. I think the era of Gangster Rapper Actors is dwindling out and Gucci will leave with it regardless of him being an actor or not. People want to hear music that relates to them and they want a relationship with a real rapper, one who is cool to chill with. Apart from that, it's starting to seem that people actually have appreciation for these artists' craft today, and really make the most talented artists the subject of most exposure i.e. Kanye West…because the reality is we, the consumer, have the control over the mainstream music industry. We decide what we want to listen to. That's why Game's R.E.D. Album keeps on getting delayed. His camp keeps dropping these b-grade “singles”, we dont like it and so his label goes back and says bring another then maybe. Personally, I think most rappers are guilty of too much b-grade material getting exposed….why put something out that even you, the artist, can't even nod your head to. ahh I could go on for days but I got shit to do *lights bong*

  2. No the hell its not a good read…. thats the type of ignorant black mentality our culture has! How the hell u gonna hate on the man for being TOO LEGIT ?!…. that doesnt even make any kind of sense ! …… wow …. niggas
