The 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards went down this Saturday October 10th with host Mike Epps and the person with the most nominations didn’t even show up. Kanye West, who was nominated for 9 awards, was a no show at the 4th annual awards ceremony. He’s taking some time out from the spotlight and has reportedly traveled to some retreat in India. Another rapper missing from the show was T.I., who is currently serving his time in an Arkansas prison on a federal weapons charge.
T.I. was nominated for six awards and took home two, including Album of the Year for Paper Trail. T.I.’s girlfriend accepted the award and read his acceptance speech. Tip says:
“Although I’m not there with you all, I’m there in spirit, my road to redemption is almost over…thanks for the support.”
Other winners of the night included Drake for “Rookie of the Year” and Ice Cube who took home the “I am Hip Hop” icon award. Busta Rhymes accepted the “DJ of the Year” award for the late DJ AM and Jay-Z paid homage to the late Mr. Magic. Later in the night Jay took home the “MVP of the Year” award and dedicated his win to Mr. Magic, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube.
Overall it was a peaceful awards ceremony, no crazy outbursts like some of the others…but BET has been holding on to the winners list so people will actually watch the show and its’ set to air on Tuesday, October 27th at 8PM EST.
