Not too long ago the New York City Council Committee on Civil Rights passed a resolution banning the word “nigga” or “nigger.” Last month the NAACP held a funeral for the “n-word” at its annual convention in Detroit. Obviously, none of that is stopping rappers from using the word, so Al Sharpton is making signs and protesting the record companies. He is urging public divestment from the music industry, meaning he is asking government-run pension fund investments to pull out of record companies until they stop allowing rappers to use the n-word and degrade women in their music.
"We’re talking about Viacom (Inc.), Time Warner (Inc.), Vivendi Universal," Sharpton told Reuters News Service. "The opposition has tried to use the argument of free speech, but they don’t have the freedom to use peoples’ pension funds against their own will and interest. I’m here in Motown in Detroit as a symbol of when music was not denigrating and was entertaining.”
According to Sharpton there has already been legislation proposed in New York state for $3 billion in pension fund investments to be moved away from music companies that distribute rap music with the offending lyrics. Sharpton plans to protest in front as many record companies as possible.
