Industry News

Further Proof that i know what i’m takling about
Last.fm added 1 million new users last week by opening it’s platform up to Xbox Live.  Some people may wonder why I stay writing about video game, tv, netflix-on-demand, and things of that nature in this column, but I really do believe that we’re going to see a confluence of media and media devices (the all-in-one internet, tv, computer, stereo portal).  To me, this is yet another step in that direction, and just shows that having a broad/wide concept of what “the industry” is can be useful.

Are Anti Piracy Laws working (or will they?)
After iPRED (a set of anti-piracy laws that get you booted off the internet for illegaly sharing music) and the benchmark verdict against the Pirate Bay, music sales in Sweden are up 18% in the last 9 months.  Coincidence, or cause (and effect) for hope?

Live Nation to  Partner with iTunes and sell concert footage
This may not seem like such a groundbreaking idea.  Concert videos have been around.  But, in an age when people (for some reason) are more willing to spend $25 on 3 hours of live entertainment than $10 on a CD that will last for years and years, the future of the digital marketplace for music may rely on innovative ways to trick the consumer work with the fans to provide them with something they’re actually willing to pay for.  And, once again, in this changing landscape where (I think) people are going to start to experience all forms of media through one centralized on-line screen/machine, being able to “feel like you’re at a concert” (minus the sweat, smoke, crowd and bouncers) in the comfort of your own home is a potentially powerful market-driving / market-creating forces.  I’m now also reading that EMI and Hulu are partnering for a similar “live music via the internet” type of experience.
