Album Sales Week of 6/9

Black Eyed Peas “The E.N.D.” – 304,476

Pleasure P “The Introducion of Marcus Cooper” – 39,022

Mos Def “The Ecstatic” – 39,365 (50 / 50 digital physical)

D-Block “D-Block” – 11,920

DJ Quik & Kurupt “Blaqkout” – 8,758

Pastor Troy “Ready for War” – 1,237

Some quick commentary… DAMN… Black Eyed Peas are KILLING it… 300,000+ and no.1 on the billboard charts, these cats have officially done the pop thing well.  And Mos Def doing 20k, that’s about where I would have put this.  And Kurupt and Quik’s Blaqkout coming in at 8,000 + don’t let that fool you, from what I can tell, that’s a win right there.

And on to some industry news:

Sales numbers analyzed

I reported on these numbers last week (in an analysis of Nielsen’s #s presentation at the NARM conference), but I’m going to throw it back out there again because I think it puts things in perspective a little bit.  Of 105,000 albums put out in 2008, roughly 1% of those, or 950 sold more than 25,000 units.  Those 950 albums combined to make up 82% of new release sales.  (So when you see Quik & Kurupt sell 8,000 1st week, and I say that’s a win, that’s why).  Those new release sales (made up in vast majority by those 950 albums) are down 18% from last year, and 50% since ’01.  That’s a bleak picture.

Myspace cuts staff by 30% in wake of Facebook overtaking them in traffic rankings

Here’s another bleak picture… After being surpassed in traffic rankings and pageviews by Facebook, MySpace is cutting 30% of it’s staff.  Can’t be a good sign, right?

Market penetration and internet use among core fan groups

My boy was telling me recently that nobody artists in Africa are selling 1-2 million units, and asking how come the CD is still doing things over there.   The lack of broadband penetration in “3rd world” countries is apparently something paralleled in the South of the U.S., as can be seen by the fact that 50% of country music fans don’t have internet access. So maybe that explains why Miley Cyrus is beating Snoop at the Billboard charts?

Universal & Virgin to offer Download & Streaming service

I think this is an interesting step.  Music NOW is what consumers want, and this will be an interesting platform to give it to them, as Virgin continues to expand which majors it is dealing with

iMeem & Warner come to (another) agreement

The streaming music site and the major label have reportedly come to an agreement whereby warner’s investment (of over $20 million at this point) will be repaid in stock.

More next time.

Peace
