What should have been nothing more than Manolo Blahniks and Prada bags, pretty girls and Tyra Banks turned into a riot this weekend. The casting call for ANTM turned into a total nightmare with six people injured, two of which were hospitalized and three arrests. Women who had been lining up in Manhattan for their shot at fame became alarmed when a car driving along the midtown street where they were lining up started to smoke and fearing that the car might blow up references to bombs were made, sending the crowd into a panic driven frenzy.
A man was also accused of encouraging more drama when he attempted to steal bags from the hopeful contestants. The police eventually broke up the riot sending those who were still anticipating meeting organizers home. Added unrest was said to be caused due to bad organization and aspiring models losing their spot in the line if they were to leave to get food or to use the bathroom. Three Bronx residents were charged however with inciting a riot and disorderly conduct. Executive producer and host of the show Tyra Banks had this to say about the event “We are concerned by the events. We still don’t know all the details of what triggered the incident. We appreciate the efforts of the NYPD and will assist them in any way possible in this matter.”
