I don’t really like to do formal reviews. To much writing and details. However, I’m listening to the new Eminem, Recovery, and I had to say something. His album leaked last night, and if I could use one word to describe the album it would be, boring. It’s always tricking sh*tting on a hip hop luminary, but I think Em has lost the edge he once had. I remember listening to The Slim Shady LP and Em just had this energy, you couldn’t really put your finger on it, but you new it was special. When I hear Em records now I don’t get that feeling. It’s really gotten to the point that not only has Eminem lost his edge, but when he breaks out “the silly voice” he sounds straight up corny.
That being said Eminem has the ability for mainstream America to get excited about hip-hop which is something I’m never mad at. However is Em really the best representation of where hip-hop is at in 2010? That’s not a rhetorical question, I really want to know. Maybe I’m just a loser blogger rap nerd, but I gotta keep it real. I’m more excited when a new J.Cole, Dom Kennedy, or even Yealwolf if we want to keep it white boy drops to be honest. This isn’t the first time I’ve insinuated that there is a generational gap in hip-hop right now. I’m not writing this to “hate” on Eminem. I’m writing this because I think it’s true. There is nothing more un hip-hop than being boring. And that’s exactly what I think his new album is.
Edit: Before anyone hates on me in the comments I require you to listen to Recovery. Remember that I am in no way doubting Eminem’s legacy. I’m doubting the strength of his most recent release.
