When you’re the nephew of arguably the greatest rapper of all time, trying to pick up a microphone and become your own man might be a difficult task; especially with all the nay-sayers waiting to drop negativity on you. But when it comes to Ramel “Mel” Carter, he would be the first person to tell you that he just brushes that off his shoulder, like his uncle would do.

The 24-year-old who also goes by the name of Kid Carter (@KidCart3r) initially made waves back in 2009, when he dropped his debut mixtape, Certified. With well over 150,000 downloads his first time out, the Brooklyn-born MC is back with his upcoming mixtape, Popular Stranger; which is spearheaded by the release of  ‘Dark Shades.’

We were able to catch up with Mel, as he and his team stopped by the iHipHop Office to talk about his upcoming mixtape, not looking for co-signs, what MCs influence him, and more.
