Jay-Z had some time to sit down and talk with Lorenzo Thomas at 99 Jamz last week to talk about a number of things, including his recent  extreme success with ‘Ye, Watch The Throne. Jay talks about how the album’s success is a direct result to Hov’s and ‘Ye’s “gimmick-free” approach.

Jay explains their approach and the real meaning of their seemingly-bold album title:

No super over-the-top, big singing chorus or anything. That’s how we launched our album. And it’s good that it’s been embraced the way it has. That means everyone’s ready for that. The return of the boom-bap.”

“It’s just protecting the music and the culture. It’s people that’s in the forefront of the music. Watch the Throne, you protect it. You just watch how popular music shift, and just how Hip Hop basically replaced rock and roll as the youth music. The same thing can happen to Hip Hop. It can be replaced by other forms of music. So we making sure that we put the effort into making the best product so we can contend with all this other music, with all the dance music that’s dominating the charts right now and indie Music that’s dominating the festivals.”

Jay-Z also takes a moment to talk about his chart-dominating wife, Beyonce and even compares her to Michael Jackson. Well if that isn’t love, I don’t know what is.

What I’ve learned from her is the same thing I’ve learning from Mike. And I know it’s blasphemy to compare the two because Mike was such an innovator, but I think she’s like the second coming. The hard work and the dedication that she puts into her show… it just makes you want to work harder.”
