Kodie shows us what happens when someone levels up in life.

18-year-old Kodie Shane has shifted her musical trajectory favorably over the past year or so. After being recruited to hop on Lil Yachty’s Sailing Team during summer ’16, the Atlanta rapper earned a spot on Epic’s roster and recently released her first project under the Sony imprint—an EP entitled, Back From The Future. Supplementing the project visually, Kodie just put out the EP’s first video for the track “Level Up”.

Beautiful vistas of a tropical landscape welcome us to the video, panning until we find the song’s protagonist, Kodie, sitting on the balcony of an all-white palace akin to Tony Montana. HD images trade-off with lo-fi montages to interestingly texturize the visual as Kodie walks through the town celebrating her rising star. “Had to drop my old whip, had to level up,” she raps in a confident, sly tone. The song’s uplifting vibes are facilitated by the riddim-type production that complement the presumed Jamaican location she’s sauntering in—Jamaican flags make cameos throughout the music video in addition to Kodie’s green and yellow ensemble.

By affiliating herself with the right people and releasing solid work, Kodie is effectively injecting herself in Hip Hop. The “Level Up” video reinforces her place as an ascending emcee.
