R.I.P. Mr. Magic

mrmagicR.I.P. Mr. Magic. Born John Rivas, Mr. Magic was one of the first Hip-Hop DJ’s on commercial radio in New York, and it is now being reported that he passed away from a heart-attack on Friday October 2nd, 2009.  In 1983, he launched “Mr. Magic’s Rap Attack,” which featured DJ Marley Marl (for those of you who don’t know Mr. Magic, you might recognize him from this Notorious B.I.G. line from Juicy “Every Saturday – Rap Attack – Mr. Magic Marley Marl”).  He went on to help found the Juice Crew (MC Shan, Marley Marl, Roxanne Shante, Biz Markie, Craig G, Kool G Rap, etc.), and was an inspiration to countless of the best in the game (B.I.G., Tupac, Nas & many many more).  For those (youngins) who still don’t know Mr. Magic, perhaps you’ll recognize him as the voice of Wildstyle Radio on Grand Theft Auto’s “Vice City.”

He was a hip-hop pioneer, and will be missed.

New Music: Ghostface Killah – “The Battlefield” Feat. Kool G Rap & AZ

A week back Ghostface Killah announced his forthcoming album 36 Seasons (his thirteenth full length album to date), which will be dropping December 9th. With that Pretty Toney shared the first single, “Love Don’t Live Here No More”. The second single, "The Battlefield", however, is more on the gritty side featuring NYC all-stars Kool G Rap and AZ. It's worth noting that in addition to "The Battlefield" AZ will be appearing on four more tracks on 36 Seasons. Listen after the jump!

New Music: Kool G Rap & Guilty Simpson – “Chess Never Checkers”

Here's a welcome collaboration: Kool G Rap and Guilty Simpson. When you look at the two rappers, on paper, this collaboration makes all the perfect sense. You've got a legend in the game in G Rap, who has put out hardcore hip-hop classics (Road to the Riches, Wanted: Dead or Alive, Live and Let Die) and Guilty Simpson, a gruff and tough Detroit rapper with all the sensibilities that make for a master ghetto storyteller. Pinning G Rap and Guilty Simpson together is a match made in heaven and their track "Chess Never Checkers" is a solid cut in this potential canon. Listen after the jump.

New Music: Saigon – “Mechanical Animals” Feat. Memphis Bleek, Lil Bibby & Kool G. Rap

Here's a treat for hardcore hip-hop heads out there. Saigon, one of Brooklyn's finest, has dropped a jewel on ya'll. "Mechanical Animals" is a beast of a track, featuring a stacked lineup which includes the legendary Kool G. Rap, Marcy alumni Memphis Bleek, and Chiraq's Lil Bibby. Safe to say you better brace yourself because all four MCs deliver stellar verses. Get at it after the jump.
