Sandra St. Victor is a name we recognize either through her collaborations with artists such as Curtis Mayfield, Prince, Chaka Khan and countless others to founding member of The Family Stand.  Sandra is a Tour de Force. Nominated for two Grammy’s, recorded a duet with Curtis Mayfield for his last album “New World Order” and remember that hit “Ghetto Heaven” back  in 1990. Yep- an International Hit for Family Stand.  Armed with powerhouse vocals, dynamic stage presence and a level of greatness- we simply can’t resist her.  So with all this under her belt Sandra produced a video for the less informed called ‘Egomentary’. Made in preparation for her new EP that’s dropping unsurprisingly on her Birthday- May 28th.

This EP entitled ‘At My Spheres’ is one of 5 in a series of EP’s being released.  Released this Friday, May 28th to the world on Sandra’s Birthday.  The collection of songs is produced by the revered producer/musician Mark De Clive -Lowe. Originally from New Zealand- lives in London. He is one of the key musicians in the Broken Beat/Nu-Jazz movement.  Producers/collaborators on the other EP’s are: Vernon Reid(Living Color) Lalah Hathaway, Dave Hollister, & Nona Hendryx.

Of  ‘Sinner Child‘  Sandra says -it’s an inner child with no boundaries. Doing what she will- fearless!

I re-connected with Sandra St. Victor last year with my Israeli Hip Hop act Coolooloosh. We were coming from one of the Roots Jam Sessions at Highline Ballroom. Sandra had performed that night.  We’ve been in touch since via Twitter and email.  She’s been living in her adopted home in The Netherlands the last few years and writing for some of the most successful artists there too.   She’ll be Stateside in August for International Soul Music Summit, Blues Alley gig late August as well as The Blue Note and then in September at BAM Cafe.

I asked Sandra where the inspiration for ‘At My Spheres’ came from. “For years I’d been trying to figure out who/where I fit in, What I identify with. No more. I identify with myself. My world is my sphere. You either get it or you don’t. I like it here.”

And upon working with Mark De Clive-Lowe, Sandra says “Mark is a monster- he literally spills music and creativity from every pore. He’s easy to work with because of that. We are very organic together. I like to say our process is simple, desire, inquire, inspire then fire!  That’s it!”

Fire it is– I’ve been listening to a couple of the tracks Sandra sent me!  Now you can too with “Cosmos”– let me know what you think.
