Serge: This one staff pick hasn’t really been on my radar, but after seeing his new video for ‘Church Clothes,’ Lecrae definitely gets himself in the conversation when it comes to MC’s on the rise. The Christian rapper just dropped his mixtape, Church Clothes, which is lead video off the project. If you haven’t checked him out yet, please do.
As for my second pick this week, it’s going out to the flamboyant, yet very talented lyricist from Detroit, Danny Brown. The XXL Freshman is back at it making waves, and this time it’s courtesy of his new joint, ‘Jay-Dee’s Revenge,’ which be featured on the Rebirth Of Detroit project, which is scheduled to drop June 12th. Can’t wait for that one.
jGerson: I might have to agree with Serge. There was nothing I was feeling more this week than Lecrae’s mixtape Church Clothes mixtape. I never expected to actually enjoy Lecrae, mostly because he’s a Christian rapper that’s signed to the cornily-named Reach Records. With that said, dude can spit and his conscious lyrics extend well beyond God-fearing ears. My personal favorite cut from Church Clothes is the 9th Wonder produced track, “Rise.”
Aside from Church Clothes, the only other thing to grab my attention was Jon Connor’s latest video for “Someone Like Me.” It’s really dope how he flipped the Kings Of Leon song. I’m looking forward to hearing more from the Flint MC very soon.
Euro_Perez: It was a slow week but my picks are Meek Mill‘s Dreamchasers 2 mixtape and the Allen Iverson Reebok Question sneaker. Dreamchasers 2 seems like an album, that’s how good that project is. If you listen to that tape, you will seamlessly run through those 20 tracks and you come out feeling some type of way!
My next pick is the A.I. Reebok Question sneakers. Those were the kicks Iverson worn his rookie year when he was killing the competition and pulled a crossover on M.J.
J Harmony: This week we got another taste of Curren$y’s upcoming Stoned Immaculate album with the video for “Fast Cars Faster Women” which features Daz from Tha Dogg Pound. Seeing that Spitta’s last video might as well have been a Wale video, it was good to see something else from the head of the Jet Life crew. Swizz Beatz also released the video for “Street Knock”, his araabMUZIK-produced street banger featuring A$AP Rocky. Not only does this song bump, but its video is a dope set of visuals that compliment the track well.
Also worth noting was the release of TDE-member Ab-Soul’s album, Control System. With “Terrorist Threats” accumulating daily plays on my iPod, Control System is sure to be on every hip-hop head’s summer playlist.
