The music video has taken on a new role and purpose in the hip-hop zeitgeist. In the current high-paced, disposable media landscape, videos have shifted away from the big-budget, atypical events they had developed into over the course of the prior two decades. You don’t need an accomplished director, a six-figure budget, or tropical backdrop to create an acclaimed rap video these days. Detroit is releasing amazing hip-hop music. Crown Nation, Quelle Chris, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Danny Brown and a whole roster of gritty, rocky, sooty rhymers are giving “homegrown” a place in rap music again. This socially-relevant and wholly irreverent tape by Denmark Vessey titled Don’t Drink The Kool Aid will be in the rotation regularly through the fall (courtesy DJ House Shoes and Dirty Science).
