On-brand for X, this is NSFW.

XXXtentacion has grown into one of the internet and music’s most controversial characters—and for good reason. His polarizing, disturbing, genre-bending content reflects his overt depression and ability to channel that pain into interesting music. Seemingly drawing more inspiration from Marilyn Manson than Snoop Dogg, X has always inserted himself into risqué scenarios to validate his disconsolate words. Last night’s Instagram post might be his most divisive move yet.

With X’s debut album, 17, dropping tomorrow, it seems that the Broward County artist is pulling out all the stops. He posted an odd video that required multiple views to grasp the severity, and what was actually occurring: X hanging himself. Given his consistent—never quiet—suicidal content, it wasn’t completely unreasonable to assume the worst while watching this video. Given that he recently dropped the somber song, “In The End”, which is a clear nod to suicide, and that he released the disturbing 17 cover art, consisting of a handwritten message stating “There is no end to the pain”, X is constantly leaving a trail of breadcrumbs towards his self-inflicted death. However, he took to social media last night to dispel these rumors.

X announced via his IG story that the video was simply for a video that he’s releasing soon, saying that “do you really think I could kill myself and show that to the kids? You don’t think I have more integrity than that?” He also released a follow-up IG video showing behind the scenes cuts from said video, proving that it really is for a visual.

X has said multiple times that this album will be for the depressed ones, and not for the fans who listen to his music to not think. It’s a big moment for the 19-year-old upstart, as he tries to prove that his artistic abilities extend passed the SoundCloud stage.

Watch his IG video below, and be on the lookout for 17 dropping tomorrow:

if you thought I would “pretend” to kill myself for a publicity stunt you’re fucking stupid
