Dropping–hopefully–tomorrow, September 11th.

Hailing from rap’s most industrious region of Atlanta, Young Thug is an acute microcosm of his hometown’s hustle. A mixtape king in his own right, Thug has watched his star swell over the years thanks to his voluminous output, which houses his unorthodox yet challenging style that has garnered him over 11.5mm monthly Spotify listeners. While he’s already made a splash this past summer with his quasi possé cut, Slime Language, featuring YSL signees Gunna and Duke, along with Lil Uzi Vert, the artist who’d like to be henceforth known as “SEX” recently announced that his 2018 presence is far from finished.

Taking to his twitter yesterday, Thugger attracted attention with a series of terse statements: His tweet, “ON THE RUN”, was quickly succeeded by, “Album in 2 days”. Yes, a new Young Thug album is imminently approaching–we’re just one-day away. Given his unpredictable artistry, it’s difficult to speculate the style that will be pursued; but, with Thug, however the outcome manifests, it typically exceeds our wildest imagination.

Given the hype surrounding the release of Slime Language, as it was his first project release in over a year, fans harbored some disappointment that it wasn’t a solo project from the man who minted Barter 6. We’ve come to look forward to Thug releases, as each one contains a unique texture, further stretching his artistic command and experimentation that lands more often that it misses. Thug is a trendsetter, a visionary. His last album, Beautiful Thugger Girls, saw our intrepid hero entertaining a country – singing aesthetic that might have been the most apt distillation of his musical range; the 2016 Jeffery witnessed a collection of hit tracks–like “Wyclef Jean” and “Pick Up The Phone” featuring Travis Scott and Quavo–that supplied a late summer soundtrack and paid homage to Thug’s greatest inspirations. We might not know what composition will be employed on On The Run, but given Thug’s storied history, smart money bets that it will be idiosyncratic, layered, and unafraid.

Slime Language might have left fans yearning for more from their courageous idol, but On The Run aims to recapture the magic conjured on his previous releases. By tomorrow, hopefully, we’ll have the answers that we’re looking for.
