California-bred emcee Murs is finally starting to gain some mainstream fame before his third major album, Murs for President, drops. Murs is currently on tour with Rock the Bells, and is preparing the afforementioned album for a September release on Warner Bros. Records. To up the hype a little bit more, Murs and longtime collaborator 9th Wonder decided to release a 10-track album for free online. The album is entitled Sweet Lord and is exclusively produced by 9th Wonder. If you don’t know 9th, he’s worked with Jay-Z, Little Brother, Buckshot and plenty of other wordsmiths over the years. Check out Sweet Lord here, and get ready for Murs for President. I’ve heard the album, and it’s absolutely ridiculous. Look for the review right here sometime next week.

Was trick Daddy the one who leaked the pics of Correctional Officer Ross to the net? I doubt it. This story has been around way before the pics surfaced really and even though Trick Daddy who has held it down in MIA for a while may have had his ego dented by Ross’s success as of late, I don’t think Trick would stoop to that level. There’s quite a bit of hit singles smashing the airwaves right now, “Girls Around the World,” “A Millie” and “We Out Here Grindin,” to name a few. However, with Rock the Bells (the ultimate hip-hoppers tour) in full effect, I’ve compiled a Rock the Bells Playlist to get you ready for the big day in your given city. The event sponsors, Guerrilla Union, have compiled a list of performers that are any hip-hop fan’s wet-dream, and hopefully these tracks will either convince you to get a ticket or will provide for some pump-up music as you make your way the the venue. Enjoy. Tribe Called Quest – “Find a Way” Nas – “Rewind” Mos Def – “Ms. Fat Booty” Jay Electronica – “Eternal Sunshine” Mixtape Method Man & Redman & Ghostface – “Buck 50″ The Cool Kids – “What Up Man” Wale – “Artistic Integrity” Enjoy kids!
Finally! An artist has his own show on MTV and he doesn’t suck! If you guys didn’t catch the series premiere for “Buzzin” the other day on MTV, you just might be missing out on an actually good show on the Music Television Network. If you’re unfamiliar with Shwayze, he was bred in the mean streets of Malibu and is currently signed to Suretone Records/Geffen Records. Shwayze is the epitome of laid-back rap and is very visibly a product of his environment. His songs are slow, catchy, and very bouncy; much like the beautiful beaches of Cali. Shwayze’s group consists of Cisco Adler on guitar/vocals, who’s the former frontman of WhiteStarr and son of famed producer Lou Adler; DJ Skeet Skeet on the 1′s and 2′s; and Shwayze. With singles “Buzzin” and “Corona and Lime” getting heavy rotation on MTV and on several radio stations, Shwayze and his cohorts are definitely making some feel-good summer music for the boys and girls. Check out his debut, due to be released August 19th. For now, download “Buzzin” below… “Buzzin” by Shwayze
Turns out Pharrell has made the mistake of opening his mouth a lil too wide to paparazzi about his friend Madonna. The Neptunes front man implied that the Hard Candy Madonna is indeed very good at self inflicted publicity. Tell us something we didn’t already know but I am sure Skateboard P will be knocked off the Xmas card list for that remark..or maybe not.
The UK is gearing up for the appearance of Kanye West at the Global Gathering tonight. A lot of planning has gone into Ye’s show and a whole load of cash too. The light show alone is supposed to have cost over $200,000. And like in true celebrity style a lavish feast is being put on for Kanye and his excessive entourage by the organizers of the show. Everyone else has to grab a hot dog from the vendor. Let’s hope he doesn’t throw another tantrum at this festival. Also appearing at the two day festival is Moby, Mark Ronson, Erik Morillo and Sam Sparro
There’s no new artist that’s utilizing the Internet age more than Mickey Factz. If you’ve checked any blog in the last months, you’ve undoubtedly seen either a picture of his mug or a fresh download of one of his new tracks. He’s even had a recent campaign in which he released a new song every single week over the Internet and even began to take suggestions for songs from fans. After seeing Mickey perform live at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival a few weeks ago, I was definitely convinced he’s next up. The best part is, he’s thrown up the peace sign/index down to all major record labels and has decided to stop bit**ing and actually utilize the Internet. With songs featuring artists like Travis McCoy, the Cool Kids, and several other hipster-hoppers, Mickey is consistently dropping factz on an under-educated and oft uninformed genre. Check out some of his recent hits below and let us know what you guys think about Mickey. Also, look for his debut to drop sometime this year on Boogie Down Records (home of “The Teacher” KRS-One). “Overdose on Life” feat. Travis McCoy “Rockin and Rollin Remix” Feat. Cool Kids “We Ain’t” Feat. Tanya Morgan “Sublime”
Gnarls Barkley finally come out with a video for the best song off The Odd Couple – “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul.” The song is very somber and slow, and should get you in that introspective mindset we all need to be in sometimes. Check out the video below. “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” Video
It’s been a few years since Young Chris and Neef made hip-hop music that was actually relevant. Though the Philly-bred boys debut single, “Cant Stop Won’t Stop” showed some promise, they never quite lived up to the hype. Years later, and with one less Neef in the picture, Young Chris is still going hard. He’s teamed up with witty wordsmith Wale for two tracks now, “Whole Time” and “Large.” The duo is surprisingly solid, and expect the Young Gunna to make an appearance on Wale’s debut album, due out whenever Interscope gets their ish together. Download “Whole Time” here and “Large” here.
Even though you can actually make excuses for Time Magazine’s mistake of declaring Lil Wayne The Best Rapper Alive, it is to many quite annoying to see Weezy being anointed with such titles. Time Mag however is not necessarily the most Hip-Hop based publication (thats where the excuse comes in) but they still managed to encourage raised eyebrows with this blurb on Weezy. “Whether Wayne is, as he claims, the “best rapper alive” is no longer even debated in hip-hop or commercial circles. Since June 10, when his latest album, Tha Carter III, sold 1,005,545 copies in its first week, he’s been the undisputed champ” And who said soundscan didn’t equal success?
