Looks like the classic Nas album Illmatic continues to weather the test of time against the cookie cutter albums and ringtone tracks the majority gravitate towards today. The debut album from the Queensbridge rapper which was released 14 years ago was one of the few to get five mics from the Source when five mics really really meant five mics. The album which featured production from legends, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, L.E.S and Large Professor is now the focal topic of a book by Eric Michael Dyson. Expected to hit shelves in early 2009, the book will analyze and ‘re-articulate’ every track from the album which is considered one of the best Hip-Hop albums ever. Illmatic has been mentioned by various rappers since it was released including, The Game (of course), Just Blaze, Lupe Fiasco and Alchemist. Eric Michael Dyson who was granted his degree from Princeton University is responsible for titles such as Holler If You Hear Me: Searching for Tupac Shakur and Is Bill Crosby Right? It makes you wonder how many of todays albums will be worthy of an accolade such as this 14 years from now.
Star Trak signee Rosco P. Coldchain made waves a few years back with features on Clones and Lord Willin’. I personally really liked him and thought he had great potential, but his album got shelved after Aristsa/Interscope merged. He’s now planning his long-awaited album and is supposedly working with DJ Premier for the entire album. In the interview, Rosco said, “Yes people, it’s official, me and Premo are back at it. Premo is the best thing to happen to me since stink on shit and swiss cheese. Ya dig? He might be doing my whole muthafuckin’ album. I’m trying to keep busy.” Rosco is a talented artists, and this would be a huge album if it actually happens. Stay tuned for more info on the Rosco/Premo album. perspective‘s two cents: I’m going to give you a track I like from Rosco. It’s called “Disappointment” and it’s pretty sick. He has some other sick song that i’m now trying to find on the internet somewhere. For now this will do. I think he jacked his name from some show, but I still like it. Rappers need to be more creative with their names. Edit: I still can’t find the song I’m looking for, but here is another Rosco joint. “Disappointment”- Rosco P. We all know Usher is an R&B crooner who has at one point or another been background music for some evening festivities of the sexual sort. His songs cater to a specific audience, and it’s pretty obvious his fanbase is mostly women. Usher’s newest tour is entitled “One Night Stand” and said in a recent interview that it will be strictly for women. No men allowed! In an interview with MTV, he said: “There’s only a few artists that can pull that off. I feel like I’ve had such a connection with my audience. This album, I felt like, was definitely the type of one that was more intimate. So what better way to get up close and personal than to make it all women?” Usher is definitely for the ladies, but whether or not this will actually work is yet to be seen. Either way, I’m not sure more than 2 men would actually want to go to one of these shows alone anyway. There is set to be 15 shows in total.

Chamillionare has been gaining his relevance back recently after dropping a new mixtape – Mixtape Messiah 4. The tape is hot and is available for download below. Meanwhile, Chamillionare told HipHopDX in an interview that he respects 50 Cent and Lil’ Wayne as essential artists in the mixtape movement. In the interview, he spoke on 50 Cent’s golden times: “Back in the day, when 50 first came out, he had some real dope mixtapes. Now, it’s more the commercial thing where people say you’re singing a hook or whatever. Back then, he was just jackin’ peoples’ beats and puttin’ them real catchy melodies on a tight beat, and just puttin’ out tight stuff.“ He also feels that Wayne’s hard work is unmatched in the current climate: “He out-working everybody on the mixtape circuit. When I talk to the underground stores out here in the mixtape world, they tell me that Wayne‘s runnin’ it. He’s the most active.” There’s no denying Wheezy and 50′s contributions to rap, and the mixtape game more specifically. Check out Cham’s new mixtape and let us know if you think he deserves to be mentioned with the elite. Chamillionare – Mixtape Messiah 4

A few months back, newcomer Jay Electronica made a splash after dropping a mixtape themed after the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The mixtape was a 20-minute trackless stream that included samples from the film and monologues about Jay from Just Blaze and Erykah Badu. Since, Jay was signed to Erykah’s label and got a major big-up from Nas. Jay is now scheduled to go on a tour with Nas for the Untitled album. And if you don’t read the credits on your new albums, Jay was the producer on “Queens Get the Money” track on Nas’s new album. Jay is an impeccable lyricist and comes up with concepts I’ve personally never heard anyone rap about. It’ll take some getting used to and some major focus on what the f*ck he’s talking about, but once you get it, you really get it. He’s not one of the Lupe’s that’s totally over heads, but rather just someone who uses crazy lyrical wit to bring up untouched topics (UFO’s??). As a Labor Day gift, there is a link below to a mixtape created that compiles all of Jay’s released material. It can be a little hard to find, so enjoy. Happy Labor Day. After being deemed Princess of the Roc back in 2005, Teairra Marie fell off he throne pretty damn quick. Well anyway it looks like homegirl is back looking for her second shot at stardom and where better to start than King mag. Maybe she is joining the ever growing line of ‘video vixens,’ but I doubt it as she is now signed to Interscope and has new management in the way of Fo’Reel Ent. (original name there…gotta love it) who basically have directed the career of Nelly. Her album is said to be dropping top of 2009 with a who’s who in production providing the Detroit gal some serious beats.
Possibly one of the best soul, R&B acts we have seen emerge in the new millennium Robin Thicke has ousted Vibe in a recent interview for not putting him on the cover because he is white. The Lost Without You singer who is a personal fave of Jimmy Iovine, Andre Harrell, Pharrell Williams and married to Paula Patton (Deja Vu and Idelwide) put the glossy on blast in a recent interview with Billboard and rightly so. Their response to Thicke asking if a cover story was a possibility was this ‘Why can’t I get the cover? This is a magazine I love. If there’s one magazine that I’d want to be on the cover of, it’s Vibe,’ “Thicke said. “Their response was they don’t have white artists on the cover; that the only white artist they’ve had on the cover was Eminem.” Funny that as I can think of Justin Timberlake on the cover of Vibe, I remember No Doubt front lady Gwen Stefani on the front cover and going through my old collections of the YEAR…wasn’t Robert DeNiro on there too. Come on good people at Vibe you need to sort your lies out if you gonna lie, becasue remarks like that are going to be put on blast. Robin Thickes Something Else project hits shelves on September 9th.
