Rick Ross has been ingrained into my everyday life at this point. The music has been incredible and his grind is really paying off with another great album. I fell victim to 50 Cent’s distraction techniques at first, but nothing could hide the fact that his music was vastly superior. With that said, I assert that Bawse is Hip-Hop’s version of David Blaine. When you think about a great magician, you understand that although what you see may look real and even feel authentic, it’s only an illusion. It has never stopped millions of people from watching and gawking at their wizardry. We know David Copperfield really didn’t make an island disappear – but it was a damn good trick that kept us entertained. We all know this dude probably never sold coke, shot people or did anything remotely gangsta like the details of his rhymes. He probably was taking notes in that prison from some real g’s and turned it into this Teflon Don album.

That is why Ross is winning – his tricks are better than most. He has maintained some semblance of street cred by associating himself with known gangsters (Freeway Rick Ross, BMF, Larry Hoover, etc.). When you hear him speak and do interviews, he doesn’t stutter or seem unsure of his words – even when people were still hitting him with those C.O. questions. He still has every major industry co-sign, despite his fraudulent past. On top of all this, he can flat out spit and his production is impeccable. Everything he’s doing looks official and has been the most consistent of any rap artist in the past 2-3 years.

Those pics of him in uniform are equivalent to someone revealing a magician’s secret (which is a Cardinal sin in their world). I understand the whole rap-was-built-on-authenticity issue, but those of us who really understand know those days are over. Who has two thumbs and wants an artist that’s a fantastic fake? This guy. Kanye West broke the mold and paved the way for the music to be held as the standard – not someone’s sordid past.

Ricky Rozay will go down in history as the greatest fraud in hip-hop history. Because of his talent and penchant for outstanding beats, he can basically live a lie that we can all enjoy. My life is hard and I need as much great entertainment I can cram in my everyday routine. I don’t care how much dope some other MC sold – if he can’t make a song like “B.M.F.” he’s useless. Meanwhile, I will be enjoying the show, fooling myself  and freeing my conscious by repeating in my head that it’s just entertainment.  What’s the difference between fake and real breasts? Fake breasts are worth more. Halleiujah!

  1. I disagree mextra. this is a great article. it's about exactly what's going on in hip-hop today. entertainment = escapism

  2. Agreed, Ross is a complete fraud. But if you're an MC out there, you should be like this: If that fucking fat black fake ass cop can make it, than so can I!!! Yeah that nigga is not the mufucka he's rapping about, but the music he produce is dope.
