Earlier this year Yelawolf dropped a mixtape entitled Trunk Muzik, and I was instantaneously turned into a fan. Shortly after, a bidding war ensued from record companies; a war that was inevitably won by Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records aka Mr. I Have That Lady Gaga Money. This past week Yelawolf dropped an EP entitled Trunk Muzik 0-60.
The album starts off in the theme of the album title with the roaring-engine infused “Get The F*ck Up”, which certainly gets you amped up for the rest of the album. The track has a little bit of a rock feel which is a re-occurring theme throughout the album. The thing I like about it is that it works. It’s not a forced commercial rock-rap hybrid like Rebirth. It’s just what Yelawolf is; a country boy from Alabama who was obviously just as influenced by people like Lynyrd Skynyrd as he was by rappers like Twista. “Daddy’s Lambo” is up next and the Drama (Rob Dydrek’s Cousin) produced track is most certainly a standout. On the track, Wolf laments his experiences of being a small town country boy who is transitioning into the LA party life.
The number three spot, “That’s What We On Now,” is a solid album cut with some bouncy production. I feel like every song has an original sound while not straying from the composition of music Yela created. “I Just Wanna Party” featuring Gucci Mane is obviously the “club record”, and it does exactly what it’s supposed to do – get you amped up to party. Also scope the dope Motion Family video for the song.
“Billy Crystal” is an ode to a country boy d-boy with lyrics like “Billy on the corner with that crystal meth” on the hook. This track helps solidify Yelawolf’s image and is one of the best songs on the EP. He paints a picture of the country lifestyle in a genre that is over saturated with descriptions of inner city life. I can’t speak on “Pop The Trunk”, I just have to link to the video because it is one of the most original and creative videos I have ever seen.

“Box Chevy” is just on that I’m drunk driving around and don’t give a f*ck vibe. It has one of my favorite lines on the album that Wolf kills with his hyper fast delivery, rapping, “Still sipping on Jack D till my neck and head start feeling heavy, doing 125 down I-20 now really think I need to start slowing down, but I can’t cause I got a pretty little blonde thing sitting to my right that’s blowing me now.” “Good To Go” featuring Bun B is a song that while “old” really put Yela on my radar. In fact, it was the song that got me to listen to the original mixtape all the way through. I just love the hook.

“Marijuana” is the only song on the album that I don’t really f*ck with. I think part of it has to do with the fact CuDi’s song of the same name is one of my favorite tracks right now. Wolf’s version has a heavy rock feel, and I just don’t really like the hook.

“Love Is Not Enough” is kind of the typical girl dissed me before I’m famous, but now I’m famous so she can kick rocks song. While the theme of the song may be cliche I still like it. I like how he clowns dudes who graduate college and wear Abercrombie. We all know the type and they suck.

I’m not mad “I Wish” featuring Raekwon. It’s a decent track, however I get the vibe it was more on the album to say “look a classic hip-hop artist is working with me” as opposed to really fitting in with the rest of the album. Or it could just be that the song is so old to me, so I see it as being stale. Finally the album drops on a dope note with the title track “Trunk Muzik,” that features a a crazy loopy beat that just goes hard.

As you have noticed I don’t do reviews that much. There is a reason that I reviewed this album, and that is because it is dope. If you checked out some of the song and/or videos and didn’t like what you heard, then don’t buy it. If you did like what you heard I highly recommend that you do.
