album sales week of 3/9/10

Ludacris “Battle Of The Sexes” 137,272 (23% digital)
Gorillaz “Plastic Beach” – 112,111
Sam Adams Wizzy “Boston’s Boy” 5,090 2nd week – TOTAL 12,705 (all digital)
Kidz In The Hall “Land of Make Believe” 2,887
Beanie Sigel & Freeway “The Roc Boys” – 1,745 (42% digital)
UNI “A Love Supreme 2.0” 334 (60% digital)
Red Cafe “The Supplier” 756 (all digital)

.

A couple of quick notes… 1) Believe it or not, Red Cafe’s numbers are even worse than they look.  Not that this was necessarily a huge project, but they’re offering it for sale on iTunes for $2.99 … that kind of sale pricing usually leads to tremendously increased sales, which means that either 756 units IS increased, or that not more than 750 thought that 10 red cafe tracks were worth more than $3 (the amount that I just forked over for an iphone app without much of a 2nd thought).

.

2) Sam Adams Wizzy is the whitest gangster since meyer lansky.  this dude outsold kidz in the hall and beanie sigel & freeway combined in his 2nd week of digital only sales, over their first week sales (combined physical and digital).  There have been lots of rumors about the legitimacy of the sales floating around, so what do you think?  Is it possible for a virtually unknown white college kid to outdo both underground and former mainstream artists who have had years of buildup and easily hundreds of thousands of dollars sunk into their respective careers?

Let me know what you think, and look out for a separate industry news post coming up soon…
