Brian Urlacher couldn’t be happier last Sunday. The Chicago Bears Linebacker had a huge standout game against the Falcons: notching an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. His performance played a huge role in Chicago’s 30-12 victory over Atlanta and it seemed like the Bears were ready for a smooth start this season.

Unfortunately, life decided to throw a huge blow to Brian and his family.

Sports Illustrated reports Urlacher’s mother, pictured here with Brian, died suddenly today in Texas. The Bears’ captain will leave the team to tend to matters involving their loss. There’s no word on the length of his absence but he provided a statement to the public on the issue.

“My first priority right now is to be with my family as we mourn her loss and make the arrangements to lay her to rest,” Urlacher said. “This is a very difficult and emotional time for us and I sincerely ask that you respect our privacy.”

Losing loved ones is always difficult. Brian, from what I’ve seen on the field, is a tough, supportive guy so one can expect he’ll stay strong and be a rock for his clan. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.
