I don’t really like to do formal reviews.  To much writing and details.  However, I’m listening to the new Eminem, Recovery,  and I had to say something.  His album leaked last night, and if I could use one word to describe the album it would be, boring.  It’s always tricking sh*tting on a hip hop luminary, but I think Em has lost the edge he once had.  I remember listening to The Slim Shady LP and Em just had this energy, you couldn’t really put your finger on it, but you new it was special.  When I hear Em records now I don’t get that feeling.  It’s really gotten to the point that not only has Eminem lost his edge, but when he breaks out “the silly voice” he sounds straight up corny.

That being said Eminem has the ability for mainstream America to get excited about hip-hop which is something I’m never mad at.  However is Em really the best representation of where hip-hop is at in 2010?  That’s not a rhetorical question, I really want to know.  Maybe I’m just a loser blogger rap nerd, but I gotta keep it real.  I’m more excited when a new J.Cole, Dom Kennedy, or even Yealwolf if we want to keep it white boy drops to be honest.  This isn’t the first time I’ve insinuated that there is a generational gap in hip-hop right now.  I’m not writing this to “hate” on Eminem.  I’m writing this because I think it’s true.  There is nothing more un hip-hop than being boring.  And that’s exactly what I think his new album is.

Edit: Before anyone hates on me in the comments I require you to listen to Recovery.  Remember that I am in no way doubting Eminem’s legacy.  I’m doubting the strength of his most recent release.

  1. word up, i heard it yesterday and it was pretty badddd mostly beat wise and rhymes were aight, but still pretty bad

  2. you know if you where saying this about the relapse album then i would understand, the album blew big nuts. but i have been and Eminem fan since the first cd and this sounds like the old Em high intensity high output. Not rapping about his mom or poppin pills or christopher reevs or mariah carrey. he's rapin about the grind positive shit like 8 mile. first of all that despicable freestyle is fucking ridiculous not to mention the song no love with little wayne, im mean he just rips the shit out of that verse. im happy to see him off the drugs and rapping hard like the old days, one thing to remember about any rapper once the hunger has gone and they make it, they never rap the same again because there not hungry anymore.

  3. i listened to it and honestly i think he was a beast lyrically….its just like when jay dropped kingdom come and everyone said it was ass but if you asked jay he would say it was more refined in style..obviously em is pushin close to late 30's but not quite old as jay but both being older artists i think they found a new way to be just as intelligent but you might have to listen harder eminem has wordplay for days on this cd tho..just my thoughts

  4. Im a big fan of Em so this CD is cool with me. Im not gonna lie I always expect way more from every artist so im usually dissapointed but not here. I think his produuction could have been a little better beat wise but the lyrics are sick. Im glad he dropped the stupid accents and just got back to doin him. For all the haters please stop. Em is a sick beast.

  5. Encore was his last smasher in my eyes. I've got mad respect for the dude and i been a fan since day one, but eminem would have been better off staying retired. he's a pioneer and his style has changed everything, and its because of that that people have such high expectations from him. if this album came out, but instead of eminem it would be a non lyrical rapper like rick ross or somebody in that area it wouldve blown up and he would be crowned as best current lyricist. the dude just simply did too good in his young days.

  6. yeah its just you. them new cats are nice (especially J. Cole) but this album is good. I dont even like the slim shady album that much, never have. MMLP and Em show are my two favs.

I think one prob with Em is that his lyrics are sooo thick and songs are long (rarely just 16 bars) that cats get a little fatigued listening to his whole albums, especially one like this with bare any features.

but there are just too many good SONGS to hate. if you dont like Em by now you never will so just stop listening to him.

songs i don't llke: WTP, your never over, cinderalla man (good but just a little too loud and nosy for me).

  7. also i really feel like this album highlights how good a of a CONCEPT album relapse was, my only gripe was it was too long and buffalo bill, music box and drop an bomb on em should have been on in place of others for a clear conceptual story.

if you compare the tone (type of beats and hooks) and lyrical content (drugs, violence, and endless serial killer ref) of relapse to recovery they are just polar opposites.

  8. SAM Ur a Fuckin Retard Before You Go Fuck yourself Listen To Recovery again and Pay Attention To the Shit Em says and the messages He trying To put across Even Know Relapse waznt that good Its Still better Than 80% of all tha albums That Came out in The past 5 years Recovery is Basically Em Trying To Fuckin Clear His Thoughts On Rap and Fame And How its Not as good as it is hyped Up to Be and at The end of Tha day Eminem Will Fuck Shit On any rapper You can Possably Think of He is Gonna Go Down in History as the BEST FUCKIN RAPPER

  9. yo i think that this recovery ablum was one of his best lp's and awhile give the man his respect

  10. For any of you who are a true em fan I think you would agree that em is back. I could not stand him when he got on that funny voice shit. A couple times was ok but not every fuckin song. This new album brings back the real em. I think alot of people are disappointed because he didnt feature his normal artists, but honestly thats why I like it. He tried something different and in my eyes he nailed it. The whole concept of the album is not letting people hold you down and overcoming the odds and if that ain't hip hop then I don't know what is. Bottom line I'm so glad em is back with music that actually has meaning and is influential. I will guarantee this album will go down as a classic for real hip hop fans. P.S I'm a club DJ and I def know the difference between good shit and bullshit. I have read most of these comments and it seems that the overall opinion of this album is good with the exception of a few. The ones who don't like this album don't listen to real hip hop, instead you probably listen to bullshit like gucci, drake, and juiceman, but for some reason…. thats whats hot.

  11. Sam has to be one of the worst writers on this site, his articles are lame, for example, he just wrote something stupid about a white sports announcer awkwardly interviewing ice cube, he thought it was weird that the white sports announcer said that today was a good day and quoting lyrics from the song, he also wrote this lame as comment “Rappers- 1 Middle Aged White People- 0” Are all sports announcers middle age white people, 2 different people from 2 different life styles, they are both making money so is anyone the loser, get this lame off the site

  12. I bet this guy thinks solja boy is the future the future of rap, probably doesn't like this album because it didn't have pop beats, catchy choruses, repetitive sayings, and a nice lil dance to go with it!

  13. i agree 100%, the guy who wrote this, Sam, and all the other haters, are all assholes that probably listen to Kanye West instead of Eminem

  14. Get another fucking job asshole, go listen to a different type of music, ur making rap fans look bad douchebag, u were probably doin drugs when u wrote this damn shity review, FUCK YOU

  15. I honestly think his album Recovery is pretty bangin, yes hes not the same but hes clean. He's sending a message to kids you dont need to be on drugs to make it big in life, hop off his shit he just stopped using drugs and hes still comin out with albums that speak true life
