After a huge 2011 which included the release of his debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story, it kind of seemed like J. Cole had quietly faded away from the limelight in 2012…that is until now. Last night the Roc Nation MC announced that his sophomore LP will be titled Born Sinner and will be released on January 28 of next year. He did so via his seldom used twitter account and his ustream account where he released the promotional video below.

I like J. Cole as an MC and as a lyricist a lot, however one issue I have had with him over the years is his lack of growth as an artist. Sometimes it feels like dude is making joints exactly the same as he was when he was on the mixtape grind.. and that’s cool and all but not if Cole wants to stay relevant and keep up with his piers like Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar who showed how much his music has evolved with his latest album Good Kid M.A.A.D. City. But maybe that’s why J. Cole has kept it on the low in 2012. Maybe he’s just waiting to hit us with some brand new ish with Born Sinner that shows us that young simba is finally ready to grow up and truly establish his place in the lion kingdom. I guess we will find out January 28th.
