Kung Fu Kenny is here to claim his hardware.

The 2017 VMAs happened last night, and with it came a competitive sleight of the industry’s most celebrated artists. From Amber Rose’s sleek, sexy black dress to Quavo’s neck that was certainly on drown, the stars aligned as the talent came out wielding their best selves. While the nominees were all well-deserving, one man buoyed to the surface above the rest.

It’s been quite the year for Kendrick Lamar. Before releasing one of 2017’s most challenging, beautiful albums, DAMN., Kenny teased the project through a couple of singles, and one particularly gripping video for the energetic, potent track, “HUMBLE.”. A strong cinematic vision brought to fruition by keen camera angles and symbolic imagery helped this Dave Meyers and The Little Homies-directed video achieve over 290MM YouTube views to date. The YouTube community wasn’t the exclusive audience aware of this visual masterpiece.

Nominated for seven VMAs, “HUMBLE.” proudly walked home with six statues. Kendrick’s powerful music video received the following awards: video of the year, best hip hop video, best cinematography, best direction, best art direction, and best visual effects, only missing on best choreographer, which went to Kanye’s “Fade”. Quite the night for King Kendrick.

The award ceremony was a fitting celebration of Kendrick and his visionary album. An album adorned in praise, risk, and success, DAMN. is an incredible addition to Lamar’s storied catalogue. Now, he has some extra hardware to add to the collection. I think he’ll have to make room for some more statues come February.
