One of the most controversial figures in professional sports, possibly the best known owner, and architect of the greatest franchise in sports of the last 30+ years, George Steinbrenner has died at 80, after suffering a heart-attack this morning. Steinbrenner has owned the Yankees since 1973, and in that time, they have won 11 pennants, and 7 world series titles. Even if the Yanks weren’t my favorite team (and the greatest brand/institution in sports), I would still want to mark the passing of a Baseball great. R.I.P. George Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner joins Bob Sheppard, the Yankees announcer for the last 50 years, who died at 99 earlier this week. R.I.P.
