One of hip-hop’s most divisive individuals, Xxxtentacion, has enjoyed a prosperous rise since he came onto the scene a couple of years ago. From SoundCloud curiosity to putting undeniable numbers on the board, all the way to achieving mainstream success with his debut album, 17, X is no longer a question mark—he’s a full-blown star. Today he validated that notion even more after inking a deal with Capitol Music Group.
He almost seemed like the holy grail to a certain extent: one of the leading faces of the SoundCloud rapper movement—one that’s consuming and dictating hip-hop—whose commercial appeal rivals his cult fanbase; all while being able to accomplish this with no label, just a distributor (Empire). Him joining with a major seemed unlikely—and unnecessary. Leave it to Capitol to capture the white whale.
The deal is reportedly worth $6MM.
