Friday delivered one of the most surprising new drops of the year: Kendrick Lamar’s GNX. Teasing it just hours before he dropped it, GNX sees Kendrick on his most menacing behavior, taking shots at everyone from Lil Wayne to Andrew Schulz. The production largely matches his temperament, with big drums and ominous melodies making up most of the album. Features are sparse, aside from two notable SZA appearances and a Roddy Ricch verse, but that’s no problem for Kendrick who has always eagerly accepted the challenge of entertaining the masses on his own. Meanwhile, New York’s very own Sheff G returns with his latest album. The Flatbush-bred rapper delivers a project that his fans will love, and one that will endear him to any new ears. In classic Sheff G, the production largely consists of open, drill-driven beats with a well-balanced selection of anthemic beats and melodically-focused beats. If you’re new to Sheff G, this is a great project to get started with.
