Jay-Z and Lil’ Wayne have traded subliminal disses back and forth in the recent past. How then did the two “Greatest Rapper Alive” contesters wind up on “Hello Brooklyn 2,” one of only three collaborative tracks on Jay-Z’s American Gangster? Turns out Jay-Z doesn’t consider the joint much of a collaboration at all.
“Wayne‘s camp sent the record and it was done,” Jay explained to MTV News recently. “So it wasn’t like a collaboration thing. It was done already…It’s more of a great record than a lyrical slugfest. It’s more a creative, great record than two guys spitting. “Success” (with Nas) is more of what people wanna look at when you judge that type of collaborative stuff. It’s me and Nas going at it.”
Wayne confirmed that track was already packaged before Jay-Z asked to use it for his album. It was previously recorded for Tha Carter III, but Weezy says he decided to relinquish it because Jay is the “king.”
