The business relationship between Kelis and her label Jive Records has come to a sudden end. K has been reportedly dumped by her label, after two albums issued on the imprint.
The decision may be linked to the poor performance of K’s last Jive effort, Kelis Was Here, which didn’t exactly shatter SoundScan records. Despite debuting at number 10 and featuring a host of big league artists (including her husband, Nas), the album sold a mere 150,000 copies.
Her manager, Jeff Rabhan, offered that it’s an issue of creative differences. “It was a case of being in the ever-shrinking world of the record industry,” said Rabhan, “and finding herself on a label she wasn’t signed to and without a champion. She’s a different kind of artist – very image and style-driven. It’s either something you get or you don’t.”
