Rapper-turned-actress-turned-jazz singer Queen Latifah has added her voice to the growing dissent on hip-hop lyrics. She wants rappers to clean up certain songs.

“When you get used to hearing the clean version of a song in the clubs or on the radio all the time and then you hear the explicit version, it’s shocking and it’s not very creative,” complains Latifah.”

“If you could clean up this record and make it sound this good, why did you ever need to make it like that in the first place? Sometimes cursing is an excuse not to use more vocabulary.”

I agree with that last point, but any tangible clean-up process in hip-hop should start in the corporate offices.

  1. I’M A FAN OF QUEEN LATIFAH & I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT SHE’S REFERING TO. SHE’S REFFERING TO THE WORDS NIGGER, BITCH & HOE. SHE CAN’T COMPLAIN B/C SHE CAN’T REALLY DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT IF U THINK ABOUT IT. SHE XAN’T GO AROUND WASHING EACH ARTIST’S MOUTHS OUT WITH SOAP. JUST LIKE RAPPER “T.I.” SAID ON “T.I. VS T.I.P.” (WHICH IS A OUTSTANDING ALBUM BY THE WAY) ANYWAY, HE SAID NIGGERZ, BITCHEZ, AND HOEZ DO EXIST. PLUS T.I. USES A LOT OF LARGE WOCABULARY IN HIS SONGS.
