“Iron” Mike Tyson seems to be gearing up for a new TV show centered around his first true love: the art of racing pigeons. The show will focus on Tyson and his attempt to “become a champ again,” this time in the field of pigeon racing (he owns hundreds of pigeons but has never trained and/or officially raced them before). It appears the show will be aired by Animal Planet (if PETA isn’t successful in shutting down production of the show first) in 2011. As usual, lots of controversy follows Tyson, as it appears the sport of pigeon racing has been called into question as abusive to the animals involved. Little can be said about this, except to sit back and watch the story unfold, whether it’s on the airwaves of Animal Planet, or in the tabloids, where this drama will unquestionably be dragged out (whether the show makes it on to air or not). Below is a choice statement from the Champ himself.
“I may have stopped fighting, but I never stopped flying birds. It’s my first love. I feel a great pride acting as an official representative for all the pigeon fanciers out there.”
“I cleaned cages, I was their go-fer…[
In exchange] “I got the stray [pigeons].”
“I couldn’t fly them off the roof, Big kids would come and steal them…
I never hurt anybody until somebody hurt one of my birds.”
