Well this is a pleasant surprise.
On the surface, Rich The Kid and Kendrick Lamar complete opposites, perfect strangers. One is a leader of the mushrooming “SoundCloud rapper” movement; one is the tie between Golden Age rap and the modern landscape. They should have zero use for one another, professionally speaking. Their styles should clash and cause friction. But somehow, they mesh—the collaboration works.
“New Freezer” is their brand new joint track, which debuted on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show earlier today. Describing how the two linked up, Rich told Zane that he was introduced to Kendrick at an Interscope recording session, and showed Kendrick the “New Freezer” track. K. Dot’s eyes lit-up when Rich told him that the track didn’t have any features—yet.
Rich The Kid spits in his typical fashion to start out the track, but the show-stealing moment comes at the hands of Kung Fu Kenny. Kendrick is a known lyrical mastermind, but one of his most impressive musical weapons is his ability to seamlessly adopt different flows. Kendrick spits in a machine gun fashion about celebrating his success, departing from his typical socially conscious self to relish in his riches.
