The late, great J Dilla is still one of the greatest producers of all time. This beautiful video shows that his music can transcend the idea of what “hip-hop” is or can only be.
Conductor Jason Weinberger, a long-time fan of Dilla’s music heard “Suite for Ma Dukes” and immediately felt the need to reach out to Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Atwood-Ferguson has created some beautiful reinterpretations of J Dillas music. He wanted to get the Dilla piece in front of one of the orchestras he works with to perform some “stunning reinventions of Dilla’s music.”
Earlier this year, on the eve of what would have been J Dilla’s 36th birthday, as part of the WCFSO’s (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra) Tribute to Great American Composers, J Dilla had his music performed alongside music legends Duke Ellington and William Grant Still. The standing ovation received by the orchestra after this performance is a testament not only to Miguel Atwood-Ferugon’s work on Dilla’s music, but to the power of J Dilla’s music on a whole. Even from the afterlife, J Dilla is continuing to move our hearts and minds with his timeless, beautiful music.
