Featuring DaBaby, Kevin Gates, & Young M.A.

As promised, today’s “New Music Friday” has not disappointed. Today, we have the sophomore albums from DaBaby and Kevin Gates, as well as Young M.A.’s official studio debut.

While he just released Baby On Baby in March, and picked up a Platinum plaque for “Suge” along the way, DaBaby is already back, locked and loaded, with Kirk. Commemorating his surname and paying homage to his late father, the second studio album from the Carolina phenom demonstrates impressive artistic development, as he’s managed to conflate Baby On Baby’s commercial appeal with honest human emotions. Speaking on family, the booming DaBaby business, and getting features from Chance, Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj, and more, Kirk stands defiantly in the face of the proverbial sophomore slump.

It’s a little unbelievable to think that Kevin Gates has just come through with second official album. Yes, he’s released a myriad of mixtapes, EPs, and singles, but up until today, Islah was his lone album. Now, he can add I’m Him to the mix.

Released through a partnership between his group, Bread Winners’ Association, and Atlantic, I’m Him is a 17-song, 49-minute, featureless endeavor. I’m Him almost acts as a coming of age story, showing Gates honing his identity, artistically and professionally.

Lastly, Young M.A. has come through with her official rookie album, Herstory In The Making. Anchored by singles that date back to July ‘18, including “PettyWap” and “Car Confessions,” Herstory In The Making has been a story… in the making. A culmination of her life, perspective, and personal growth, the 21-track project shows the Brooklyn MC’s distilling her life on wax — what she’s seen, what she’s encountered, and what she’s expecting to see.
