industry news.

Transworld To Close 125 stores

Quick Insider tip… Today’s sign that the industry is crumbling: Transworld (home of F.Y.E. and Coconuts) is shutting down 125 stores starting this holiday sales season.  SMH @ CD Retailers.

Facebook fires a shot at iLike / MySpace
The battle heats up…  I gotta say I saw this one coming.  Once MySpace bought iLike, it was a sure bet that Facebook wouldn’t continue helping “the enemy” integrate with their site.  So now, iLike is still there, but it’s no longer got preferred positioning on Facebook… no more blasts about concerts, updates, suggestions, etc.  The real question now is, what’s next for music on Facebook?  With MySpace buying up all the well-branded streaming music sites, either Facebook is going to have to buy LaLa, partner with Google, or create their own music system.

MySpace to buy iMeem?
Speaking of MySpace buying up all the well-branded (and undercapitalized / no monetization model in place) streaming music sites, MySpace is looking to get a firesale price on iMeem, similar to how they acquired iLike in the first place.  What’s the motivation?  are they just aggy that other companies have taken over as “leaders” in music on the web, and because they have deep pockets, they’re trying to buy their way back in, or are they actually looking towards the future, and trying to think up a viable business model that involves streaming audio?  Or are they just trying to define themselves in opposition to Facebook now (as in, Facebook has EVERYTHING else, but we have music)?

Terra Firma to write down EMI Debt by 90%
Citigroup is unwilling to back the proposed refinancing, so Terra Firma, who bought EMI for $6.7 billion is going to “write down” their debt by 90%.  How will this affect EMI?  Not gonna be pretty… that’s just my guess.

DJ Hero – Flop City
The game sold 122,000+ copies in it’s first week, across 4 gaming platforms.  That may sound ok compared to some of the album sales #’s above, but when you compare that to the 5 million copies that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold on it’s first day, it’s not lookin so hot.

Anyway, as usual, until next time…

peace.
