It appears Nas was right; Def Jam doesn’t understand rap….because if they did, they wouldn’t have signed Shyne without hearing him spit!  Today, Def Jam’s five million dollar investment fired shots at CEO Antonio L.A. Reid, telling SOHH, “I’m definitely trying to get with Cash Money but the Def Jam thing is a question mark right now…I’ve been fixing to get up out of there for a while now because L.A. Reid don’t care about hip-hop. The people up there, they don’t know what they’re doing.”  I guess Shyne really thinks Birdman’s going to capitalize on publicity and will make fans forget about this.  In recent weeks, L.A. Reid’s job title has been in question as he’s come under scrutiny for several business moves.  In his interview, Shyne also cited Jimmy Iovine (Interscope) and Lyor Cohen (Warner) as two people that care about artists.  While I don’t want to discredit Shyne or put down either mogul, Iovine’s label dropped Rakim, Busta Rhymes, and Lloyd Banks, and Atlantic Records, which is owned by Warner has been jerking Lupe Fiasco as of late.

While I could go on all day clowning Shyne for sounding like a slow speaking emphysema patient, I have to say that he made one valid point.  Later in the interview Shyne said, Def Jam has “The Roots, Ghostface, Nas, probably the best hip-hop roster you could imagine and they do nothing.”   In my opinion, Shyne sounds like a legit dude and is concerned with the state of music.  However everything he’s released post-prison has been garbage.  Needless to say it was an a$$-backwards move on Def Jam’s behalf to contract Shyne, even if his name gained a significant buzz pre-prison release. Maybe after all that online criticism from all of y’all (myself included), L.A. Reid will realize that shouldn’t give a f*ck about Shyne anymore.
