This week wasn’t quite as crazy as last week in terms of industry news (read: business going bankrupt etc), but there are still some interesting developments on the horizon:

iTunes Launches variable pricing – Major labels are expected to jack up the price of new music singles to $1.29 leaving fans asking WTF again, as it seems like the major labels are stumbling into the same pitfalls that have (in part) led to their demise in the first place… namely, not staying in touch…  it’s a RECESSION people… why you trying to raise the prices?

• There are rumors of a Twitter x Google deal on the table
– While this might prove interesting for Twitter (which is blowing up so hard that their site is down half the time from the traffic they receive), the real question is, will it be a good idea for Google?  Google has always been on the cutting edge on the internets… copping YouTube back when it was still on the come up.  Good move right?  eh….  Current estimates (via Hypebot) say that the internet video giant will lose $470.6 million in 2009!

• In more Google related news, they have just started operating a music search engine in China – We all know that China is where the future’s at, with 1 billion people and the way their economy is, they’re on the move.  So it’s interesting to keep an eye on what’s going on over there, especially in terms of the internet… is this what we should expect in the US in a couple of years?  I wouldn’t be surprised if we see music.google.com sooner than that

Solange Knowles was dropped from Interscope – I can’t really say I’m too broken up… they dropped her because her 138,000 selling debut album was disappointing to them… major labels stay wiling… those kind of numbers — which are admittedly not Beyoncé-esque — generate roughly $1 million in revenue… if they were to have spent a reasonable amount of money on promotions etc, which is very difficult for the majors, they would be sitting pretty…  Too bad major labels stay wiling.

Urbanmag-online fires shots at DJ Vlad! – Says urbanmag “He’s like the uncle who comes to family gatherings and entertains, but all his nieces are told not to sit on his lap”
!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEAT ROCKS !!!!!!!!!!!  they’re going in now… it’ll be interesting to see how Vlad responds…

Stay tuned for next week… and as always, feel free to get at me with questions, comments etc.

Peace
