With bling on the decline in hip-hop the LA Times recently caught up with Common to hear his feelings on the phenomena.

I think it’s great that [bling] is gone,” he told the Los Angeles paper. “That really didn’t exemplify style. It was just like, ‘I have the money to buy this.’ And that ain’t what style’s about. … I think good style is about having an eye for quality things and putting them together so they have a feel and integrity and flavor.

I couldn’t agree more.  Bling is merely a statement that you have uneccesary disposable income.  It doesn’t take any time or thought to buy a diamond necklace.  Just money.  Plus most of the jewelry rappers are wearing is fake, so that’s not exactly something to be proud of.
