So there has been a lot of hoopla surrounding the expansion of Rick Ross’ Maybach Music group. To be honest I’m a little confused. The Wale signing has been confirmed, and it has been rumored that Meek Mill will be joining the squad as well. That leaves the illustrious Triple C’s crew (Gunplay, Torch, & Young Breed) & Masspike Miles. That looks like a list of tax write offs to me, not a hot commodity of new artists.
If I were a major label being shopped this imprint, I personally would be hesitant to get involved. The most valuable commodity within the group, the boss Ricky Ross, is still signed to Universal/Def Jam (although I’m not sure how many projects he has left on his contract.)
Plus is signing Wale a good look? He is the most high profile acquisition of MMG, and that guy’s stock seems to be plummeting if anything. Ever since Cudder called him out people have kind of come to realize Wale is a creation of some excellently planned social climbing. Dude had Jimmy Iovine (Interscope Records), Mark Ronson (tastemaker/Alido Records), and Roc Nation behind him and he didn’t pop. And now that he is getting lit with Rick Ross things are going to work out for him?
Hey, anything can happen. Rick Ross does have a penchant for picking ill beats. So maybe he can use his A&R skills into making good music with mediocre artists. I’m not saying MMG won’t win. All I’m saying is don’t get caught up in the hype. Hype has no effect on the bottom line. And last time I checked the bottom line for these labels was f*cked up.
