The entertainment television channel bases its ranking for ‘Hottest MCs List’ on criteria and a majority vote by panelists who consider lyrics, sales, buzz, impact, and more, according to the official website.
West did not take kindly to being seventh, as even his G.O.O.D. protégé Big Sean earned the sixth spot.
“Yea, number 7 bothers me,” West revealed in a phone interview with Hot 97’s DJ Enuff.
But just because he feels he should not be number 7 doesn’t mean West considers himself the best MC either.
“I think that Wayne is the number 1 rapper in the world…” West continued.
Lil’ Wayne, after hearing about this compliment, tweeted, “That’s the ultimate compliment coming from a humble, great, extremely creative, & superior genius…I appreciate that Yeezy!”
“Yea, I just think he’s like… him, Jay, Em [Eminem] and certain people are just like the greatest RAPPERS of all time,” West went on to say in the Hot 97 interview.
He stated that he should be in the top 5 list of best MCs, and blames his new image for his coming in seventh.
“What happens with these type of judges and people who are viewers, when you come in, I had the pink polo and the backpack, then I’m checking all the boxes for that Tribe Called Quest-era and J Dilla and all that, so they champion it. They don’t like Givenchy-Kanye. They don’t like Kanye in a kilt. They don’t like Kanye in a relationship.” West is currently dating Kim Kardashian, and the two are expecting their first child in July.
The rest of the list for top MCs has yet to be revealed. The number one MC will be revealed on “MTV Jams” March 7 at 10p.m. E.T.
