As a whole, the south has deepened hip-hop’s thread count by producing some of the finest individual talents–like Outkast, UGK, Future, T.I., Weezy, etc.–but, perhaps more importantly, it’s changed the thread used to stitch together the fabric of hip-hop’s storied past.

From the kings of Atlanta to the Texan originators of chopped and screwed, the south has consistently impacted the music and culture with its innovative, bold approaches. Nestled between those regions is the twang purveyor, Memphis. Molding old and new talent alike, Memphis continues its rich tradition by way of Young Dolph and Key Glock. Recently, these two linked for a Capital Xtra freestyle over the classic Project Pat–another Memphis native–instrumental, “Cheese and Dope”–a cut from his 2001 album, Mista Don’t Play: Everythang’s Workin’.
