Despite the fact that this was the first week in a long time to see 3 albums break 100k on the billboard charts (Christina Aguilera, Fox’s Glee, and the Twilight Soundtrack), it was an ugly week for hip-hop sales.  Lil Jon sold under 9k units.  Rhymefest is pretty consistent with his midwest fanbase, and I think he usually does better than 1k.  Also, with all the love from iTunes, I would’ve expected that Rakim’s live iTunes album would have sold a little more.  But I guess kids don’t know the God MC.  And it keeps getting more disappointing.  Reef The Lost Cauze & Dutch combined for just under 500 total sales for Enemy Soil, the newly independent venture from the Jedi Mind Tricks Philly hip-hop scene.  And that’s not the half of it.  I actually used to listen to guys like Chali 2na, J-Live, and MF Grimm.  They each sold less than 200 units, with J-Live rounding out the bottom there, just under 100.  Someone can check me up if need be, but I think he sold 60k once on an indie project.

Anyway, the best (and worst) news for hip-hop album sales is coming up quick next week.  Drake, the R&B/Hip-Hop/Black/Jew/Canadian/Degrassi star is gathering album sales like a snowball rolling downhill.  “Thank Me Later” came out yesterday, to lines of screaming teenage girl fans, a 25,000 person crowd in New York that erupted into Riots, and a host of articles, from the front page of the New York Times Sunday Arts & Leisure section to Slate (best article I’ve read on Drake because it echoes my sentiments) to, well, everyone. Everyone is talking about Drake.  Last year’s free mixtape “So Far Gone” has gone gold so far, so how far will “Thank Me Later” go in it’s first week?
