In times of civil unrest, those hurting and demanding justice will often have their cries echoed by artists who share the same sentiment. Answering the call, Ski Mask The Slump God has distilled his talent and frustrations into the awe-inspiring new single and video, “Burn The Hoods.”
Black Lives have always mattered, but our country’s actions begs to differ: slavery forced relocation and marginalization; David Duke, the former Grand Wizard of the KKK, held political office in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s; the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice — and so, so many others — are specs on a bleak, dotted history of legalized murder.
It’s repugnant.
Our society operates in a fetishzing capacity, acting as voyeurs on the Black American’s pursuit by partaking in their culture when it’s convenient and entertaining, but abandoning allyship when consequential matters — like the perpetual threat of police brutality — rear their heads.
Taking back the narrative, Ski Mask The Slump God’s “Burn The Hoods” video, directed by Cole Bennett of Lyrical Lemonade, is a necessary statement from a voice who is just as tired and angry as those protesting in the streets for a common goal: justice.
The sub-three-minute visual is a revenge plot against the pillars of racism that have plagued the Black community since their forced arrival on U.S. soil. From burning confederate flags to disembodying KKK members, “Burn The Hoods” represents the exact beauty that art poses: uninterrupted, resonating messaging in the name of advancing necessary conversations.
Some might look at this video with disgust, due to the violent nature. Those same people are the exact ones who will post rap lyrics in their IG captions, but will be silent when unity is needed most. Simply, they don’t get it. They see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear. I bet they also think All Lives Matter…
