With performances from Post Malone, Travis Scott, and more.
All of the stars showed-out last night for the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards. A convergence of talent–including the likes of Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Camila Cabello, among others–the VMAs are an intersection of varying music genres, celebrated through the lens of videos. Mirroring the industry trend of hip-hop’s furious ascent to music’s summit, most of the amorphous awards–like “Song of summer”–went to the hands of this genre’s most dominant players.
Headlined by winners like The Carters, Kendrick Lamar, and Childish Gambino, last night’s VMAs were a celebration of music in general, sure, but indirectly served as a stark reminder of hip-hop’s encompassing allure. A category that once was relegated to urban pockets has transcended these limitations to become the industry’s most palatable discipline. And it looks like this is only the beginning.
