There’s something about Ken Griffey Jr that seems so genuine. I can’t exactly put a finger on it, but I know that I, along with millions of baseball fans will certainly miss it. At forty years of age, “the kid” called it quits yesterday afternoon, ending a twenty-two year career that will most certainly end with a speech in Cooperstown. One can’t fully understand the effect Griffey had on baseball by looking at his stats alone. While 630 home runs and 1,836 RBI’s are impressive, one must understand he is one of the few great players of his era to not be involved in steroid usage. He was also one of the first players to play in exhibition games overseas, and his play in Japan in 1994 helped pave the way for current Mariner Ichiro Suzuki.  One can only imagine what he would have done if injuries hadn’t destroyed the second half of his career.  If you think 500 home runs is special, Griffey was on pace to hit 800.  The game of baseball and the sporting world will certainly miss the kid, and we can only dream of what he would have done if the injuries hadn’t taken over.  We’ll miss you Ken, see you in Cooperstown.
