So I have been following this story for awhile now.  And it’s kind of depressing.  I think I’m going to give you a brief summary of what happened and then link to detailed stories.

On July 28th Lorenzen Wright was found murdered in the woods outside of Memphis.  Obviously when someone is murdered red flags are going to be raised.  Particularly when the FBI already has a file on you for selling your cars to known drug dealers.  There had also been some chatter that his ex-wife had previously threatened him, so her name was brought up as a potential suspect in Mr. Wright’s murder.  However, Sherra Wright (Lorenzen’s ex-wife) inevitably revealed that three armed men showed up at her house looking for Lorenzen six weeks before he was found shot to death.  Finally Sherra revealed that the night Lorenzen was killed he left the house with money and drugs.  According to the AP:

  • MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The ex-wife of slain former NBA player Lorenzen Wright told police she saw him leave her home carrying money and a box of drugs the night he disappeared, according to court documents obtained Wednesday. Sherra Wright said her ex-husband left her home at 10:30 p.m. on July 18 with the drugs, returned a short time later and then left again with an unspecified amount of money, said an affidavit for a search warrant by Memphis police Sgt. W.D. Merritt. Before he left, Sherra Wright said she overheard her ex-husband on the telephone telling someone that he was going to “flip something for $110,000,” the document said.Sherra Wright said Lorenzen Wright left her home in a car with a person she said she could not identify. Hours later, police dispatchers received a 911 call from Wright’s cell phone and heard noises like gunshots before the call was dropped.

So this is obviously all specualton, but it appears as if Mr. Wright got caught up in the drug game to help manage his broken finianicial situation.  It’s just such a terrible thing to happen.  I feel like we are constantly hearing stories about athletes who have been bankrupted by their own wealth.  The honest truth is that a lot of proffesional athletes come from low income homes and are unable to properly manage their newly found wealth once they recieve it.  I think it’s really gotten to the point that the leaugues institute some sort of required wealth management classes for their rookies or something.  You know what they say.  More money, more problems.

  1. I am saddened to hear of the death of Lorenzen Wright. Even though I had not heard much of him in the last few years still as knowing of him from his basketball career it saddens me to hear of another athlete being murdered or having died too soon. My prayers go out to Mr. Wright's family.

  2. You're treating Sherra's story like its true. It's very very unlikely that this story is true. Let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt until the investigation concludes which may not be all that long.

  3. Her story is a pack of lies I'm from Memphis and trust me it's not true, her story has changed so much tell it hurts but one thing is true he loved his kids.So may he rest in peace!!!!!!
