album sales week of 12/8

This was a big week, the first big week of the 4th quarter for hip-hop, and I have to say, some of these numbers have to be a little disappointing.

.

Chris Brown “Graffiti” – 101,888

Gucci Mane “The State Vs. Radric Davis” – 90,000

Snoop Dogg “Malice N Wonderland” – 59,331 (17% digital)

Timbaland “Shock Value 2” – 39,684

Clipse “Til The Casket Drops” – 31,512 (22% digital)

B.G. “Too Hood 2 Be Hollywood” – ~19,000

and now, on to industry news…

EMI Gets into the Merch Game
EMI, despite it’s incredibly large debt situation, has acquired Europe’s largest independent music merch distributor (Loudclothing.com).  They’ve had a merch division since April 2009, but with this new development, it seems as if they’re really looking towards a future where selling recorded music is not going to finance their debt.

.
The Future is streaming?
This a good piece, running over most of what we already know… that the entire music industry model of “owning” is falling by the wayside, in favor of streaming.  How do you feel about this though?

TuneCore adds MySpace
Now, if you use TuneCore to distribute your music digitally, you can look forward to trying to collect streaming revenues from MySpace.

Borders to Shutter UK Stores
Borders will be closing it’s UK stores on Dec. 22nd unless a buyer emerges.  Is this same move far off in the states?  Are book stores going to be the next retail variety to start dropping like flies?

Till Next time, have a happy holiday season, get some good drink, good food, good company, and take it easy.

Peace.
